When the imam is with the people praying in the mosque, they are to stand when he stands. If they are waiting for him, they are to stand when they see him. The evidence for the this is the ḥadīth (narration) of Abū Qatādah wherein the Messenger of Allāh (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said, “When you hear the iqāmah, do not stand until you see that I have come out” [Reported by Muslim: 604].
