The ruling on fasting Saturday outside of Ramaḍān

It is makrūh (disliked) to single out Saturday for fasting. This is because it was narrated from ‘Abdullah Ibn Busr who narrated from his sister that Allāh’s Messenger said, “Do not fast Saturday unless it is a fast that Allāh has made an obligation for you. So, even if you can only find a grape skin or a piece of wood from a tree, you are to chew that.” [This ḥadīth was graded as ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) by Al-Shaykh Al-Albānī in Al-Irwā`]


      Āyāt (verses) in which there is mention of the Sabbath (Saturday)

      Allāh the Most High says (translation of the meaning): You certainly know those amongst you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday). We said to them: “Be monkeys, despised and rejected.” The tafsīr (exegesis) of this noble Āyah (verse) is: You (Jews) know - what happened to your ancestors from the town whose inhabitants disobeyed Allāh when Allāh had ordained for them to honour the Sabbath. They did a tricked to fish on Saturday, by setting nets and digging pools, then they caught them on Sunday. This was a trick that they used to do something prohibited. Because they did that, Allāh transformed them into outcast monkeys. [Al-Tafsīr Al-Muyassar (Simple Exegesis)]


          What should you do if you did not pray witr because you slept through the appointed time or because you forgot?

          1. Pray it as you would normally pray it. The evidence for this is the ḥadīth of Abū Sa‘īd Al-Khudrī in which he said: Allāh’s Messenger (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said, “If somebody did not pray witr because he slept through the appointed time or because he forgot, he should pray it when he remembers.” [This ḥadīth was graded as ṣaḥīḥ by Al-‘Allāmah Aḥmad Shākir in his checking of Al-Tirmidhī] 2. Pray it during daytime as twelve rak‘ah (units of prayer). This is what was narrated by ‘Ā`ishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) from the actions of Allāh’s Messenger (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) when she said, “When he did not pray the night prayer (qiyām al-layl) because he was overcome by sleep or pain, he would pray twelve rak‘ah during daytime.” [Reported by Al-Imām Muslim]


              How did the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) use to perform the witr prayer?

              The Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) used to pray witr as three consecutive, unbroken raka‘āt (units of prayer). The evidence for this is the ḥadīth of Ubay Ibn Ka‘b in which he said: In the first rak‘ah, the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) would recite Sūrah Al-A‘lā (Sūrah no. 87). In the second, he would recite Sūrah Al-Kāfirūn (Sūrah no. 109). In the third rak‘ah, he would recite Sūrah Al-Ikhlāṣ (Sūrah no. 112). [This ḥadīth was graded as ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) by Al-Shaykh Al-Albānī in Ṣaḥīḥ Sunan Al-Nasāī] •He would sometimes separate the shaf‘ (even number of raka‘āt) from the witr (odd number of raka‘āt). The evidence for this is that Ibn ‘Umar said: the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) would sometimes separate the shaf‘ (even number of raka‘āt) from the witr (odd number of raka‘āt) with a taslīm (saying salām) which he would say such that we could hear it. [Reported by Al-Imām Aḥmad in Al-Musnad]


                  What did the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) use to recite in the witr prayer?

                  It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that, “the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) used to pray three raka‘āt (units of prayer) for witr. In the first rak‘ah, he would recite Sūrah Al-A‘lā (Sūrah no. 87). In the second, he would recite Sūrah Al-Kāfirūn (Sūrah no. 109). In the third rak‘ah, he would recite Sūrah Al-Ikhlāṣ (Sūrah no. 112). [This ḥadīth was graded as ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) by Al-Shaykh Al-Albānī in Ṣaḥīḥ Sunan Al-Nasāī]
