Some of the conditions that must be fulfilled for wuḍū` (ablution) to be correct:

  1. The conditions that must be fulfilled for wuḍū` (ablution) to be correct include that the person must be a Muslim, that he must be of sound mind and that he must have reached the age of being able to understand. This means that it is not correct if it is performed by a disbeliever or somebody who is mad. It does not count if it is done by a small child who hasn’t yet reached the age of being able to understand. [Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar (Fiqh Made Easy): p.29].
  2. One of the conditions that must be fulfilled for wuḍū` (ablution) to be correct is the intention. The evidence for this is the ḥadīth (prophetic narration) which states, “Actions are only judged by their intentions” [reported by Bukhārī]. There is no evidence that the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) pronounced his intention, so it is not correct to pronounce it [Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar (Fiqh Made Easy): p.30].
  3. One of the conditions that must be fulfilled for wuḍū (ablution) to be correct is that the water must be clean and pure and suitable for purifying oneself, because wuḍū is not correct if the water is impure. The parts of the body must also be washed in quick succession and in the prescribed order [Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar (Fiqh Made Easy): p.30].
  4. Another condition is that that anything preventing the water from reaching the skin, such as wax, paste or the like, must be removed. This also includes nail varnish used by women today [Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar (Fiqh Made Easy): p.30].
