How the Salaf (early generations of Muslims) were re prayer:

  1. It was narrated from Thābit Al Bunānī that he said, “I encountered a man from the tribe of Banī ‘Iddī who said, “They used to pray such that they would have to crawl to bed after praying”” [Ḥilyatu Al Awliyā` 2/256].
  2. It was narrated from Saīd Ibn Al Musayyib that he said, “Every time that prayer time came, I was ready and prepared for it; And every time a compulsory prayer came, I strongly desired to perform it.” [Ḥilyatu Al Awliyā 2/163].
  3. It was narrated from Ibn Al Munkadir that he said, “Had you seen Ibn Zubair while he was in prayer, you would have said he was the branch of a tree being blown about by the wind. Had a catapult been fired all around him, it wouldn’t have bothered him.” (Translator’s note: this indicates how firm and focussed he was in prayer) [Ḥilyatu Al Awliyā` 1/335].
