Situations in which wuḍū` (ablution) is desirable:

  1. If somebody is in a state of janābah (major ritual impurity) and wants to sleep, it is desirable to perform wuḍū. The evidence for this is in the ḥadīth (narration) of ‘Ā’ishah that when the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) was in a state of janābah and wanted to sleep, he would perform wuḍū as he would for prayer before sleeping [Reported by Imam Muslim: 305].
  2. Situations in which wuḍū (ablution) is desirable: Before ghusl (bathing). The evidence for this is the ḥadīth (narration) of ‘Āishah (may Allāh Be Pleased with her) in which she said that “when the Messenger of Allāh (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) performed ghusl due to being in a state of major ritual impurity, he would begin by washing his hands and would then use his right hand to pour water onto his left and wash his private parts. Then he would perform wuḍū` as he would for Ṣalāt (prayer)”. [Reported by Imam Muslim 316]
  3. Situations in which wuḍū (ablution) is desirable: When going to bed: The evidence for this is the ḥadīth (narration) of Al-Barā Bin ‘Āzib (may Allāh be pleased with him) in which he said, “The Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said, “When you go to bed, perform wuḍū` like you do for Ṣalāt (prayer), then lie on your right hand side””. [Reported by Imam Bukhārī: 247]
