What wuḍū` (ablution) is necessary for:

  1. Prayer: The evidence for this is the ḥadīth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allāh be pleased with him) which is attributed to the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) that “Allāh does not accept a prayer performed without wuḍū`, nor does he accept charity from spoils of war taken before they are divided by the commander” [Reported by Muslim: 224].
  2. Ṭawāf (circumambulation) of the Ka’bah, whether obligatory or supererogatory: The evidence for this is that the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) would perform wuḍū then perform Ṭawāf (circumambulation) of the Ka‘bah and that the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said, “Ṭawāf (circumambulation) of the Ka‘bah is prayer, except that talking is allowed during it” [Authenticated by Sheikh Al-Albānī in Al-Irwā no. 121].
  3. Touching the Muṣḥaf directly with one’s skin. The evidence is that Allāh says, “None touch it except the purified” and that the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said, “Only a pure and clean person may touch the Muṣḥaf.” [Authenticated by Sheikh Al Albānī in Al Irwā`: 122].
