Things that make ghusl (bathing) obligatory:

  1. One of the things that make ghusl (bathing) obligatory is when ejaculatory fluid is emitted from the private parts of a male or a female provided that it flows outs due to pleasure. The evidence for it being obligatory is where Allāh says (the meaning of which translates as) “And if you are in a state of impurity, purify yourselves” [Al-Māidah, Āyah No. 6] and that Ali (may Allāh be pleased with him) said “When fluid comes out from you, perform ghusl” [Authenticated by Al-Albānī in Al-Irwā: 125]

*If somebody sleeps then finds semen on his clothes but doesn’t remember anything, does he have to perform ghusl?

Yes, if somebody wakes up and finds some semen on his clothes, he must perform ghusl, even if he cannot remember it. The evidence for this is that, when the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) was asked, “Does a woman have to perform ghusl when she has a wet dream?”, to which he replied, “Yes, if she sees the fluid” [Reported by Imam Muslim 313].

  1. One of the things that make ghusl (bathing) obligatory is putting all of the tip of the tip of the penis or an equivalent portion inside the vagina without a barrier, even if he does not ejaculate. The evidence for this is that the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said, “When he sits between her four limbs and the circumcision touches the circumcision, it becomes obligatory to perform ghusl.” [Reported by Imam Muslim under number 349]
  2. One of the things that make ghusl (bathing) obligatory is when a disbeliever becomes Muslim, including an apostate because the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) told Qais Ibn ‘Āṣim to perform ghusl when he embraced Islam [Authenticated by Al Albānī in Al-Irwā` 1/163]
  3. One of the things that make ghusl (bathing) obligatory is when a woman’s menstrual bleeding or postnatal bleeding comes to an end. The evidence for that is the ḥadīth (narration) of ‘Ā`ishah (May Allāh be pleased with her) that the Prophet (May Allāh praise him and Peace be upon him) said to Fāṭimah Bint Abī Ḥubaish, “When the menstrual period begins, stop praying; and when it comes to an end, perform ghusl and pray” [Reported by Bukhārī 320].
  4. One of the things that make ghusl (bathing) obligatory is death. The evidence for this is the ḥadīth of the ghusl of Zaynab when she died, when he said “Wash her” [reported by Bukhārī: 1253]. He also said regarding the person who was in iḥrām “Wash him with water and Ziziphus” [Reported by Bukhārī 1266].
